"What does your plot look like? Is it on bedrock, a flat field, or something in between?"
Before you begin to build a new house, there are a number of important things to consider. We asked Henrik Fogelklou, landscape architect LAR/MSA, to share his five best tips for the new home builder.
1. Exposure
When building a new house, begin by determining the directions of the compass. We all know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, but this may be easily forgotten when planning a house and garden. Taking advantage of sun exposure for as many hours as possible is of major importance.
2. Topography, walls and slopes
What does your plot look like? Is it on bedrock, a flat field, or something in between? When building a house you should always note the natural differences in elevation of the plot, which may advantageously be used when planning walls, slopes, planted areas and stairs. Let your imagination go!
3. Planted areas, care and maintenance
There’s nothing better than a dazzling garden, but it also requires a large effort. Create a garden that you can handle in terms of care and maintenance. Remember that some plants thrive in full sun, while others prefer the shade. Each plant occupies its own niche in the garden.
4. Outdoor living spaces
Sun and shade vary in the garden throughout the day. What time of day do you prefer to enjoy your outdoor living space – morning, noon or evening? Carefully plan locations for your outdoor living spaces to achieve the best possible solutions. The ability to move freely and easily between house and garden provides a strong sense of freedom.
5. Floor plans
The general rule of thumb is to have small windows toward the north and large generous windows facing south for a good indoor climate and energy efficiency. Bedrooms benefit from facing north, while generous living areas should face south.
